Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior official commented the vandalism made him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
