Exceptional Red Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Atmosphere
A group of photographers based in the island nation have successfully captured photographs of red lightning, one of the least common celestial events globally, during which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The photographers began their evening to shoot the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a night in October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.
Initially believing they would be blessed to get good weather that evening, but their night transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.
While reviewing his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and found he had captured red sprites,” he explained. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
Red sprites are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, generated by thunderstorms. In contrast to traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, the phenomena ascend towards the higher altitudes, creating shapes that are similar to pillars, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The earliest recorded picture of a this phenomenon was recorded – by chance – in 1989, by a research unit at the an educational institution.
Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but an individual had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward an occurrence when it took place – an ideal happenstance viewing the right part of the sky and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.
Observing the events was a goal for the artist, an honored nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to witness.”
Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery
Photographing a red sprite demands a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an knowledge about science and innovative thinking, the individual said. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
Another photographer commented it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band shining above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light danced above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he said.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no other images showing crimson flashes and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.
“This was a singular occasion when you know you are observing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
