Hamas representatives and Israeli delegates start mediated discussions in Egypt on American Palestinian peace proposal.
News Agency
Third-party negotiations working toward a comprehensive deal on a US peace plan to halt hostilities in Gaza have begun in the Egyptian city of the Egyptian resort town.
Local and international officials have reported that the sessions are centered around "preparing the environment" for a possible exchange that would involve the freeing of all Israeli hostages in compensation of a number of incarcerated individuals.
Hamas has said it accepts the ceasefire initiative in part, but has omitted reference to several essential conditions - particularly its weapons surrender and political participation in Gaza.
Israel's prime minister said on the weekend that he anticipated declaring the freeing of captives "soon"
Historical Framework
The talks, which will see regional and international officials facilitating discussions with delegations from both the conflicting parties individually, take place on the approach of the second anniversary of the armed assault on border communities on 7 October 2023, in which nearly 1,200 people were fatally wounded and 251 others were captured.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response. Since then, over 67,000 have been lost their lives by armed interventions in Gaza, based on data from the area's Hamas-run health ministry.
Proposal Framework
The comprehensive proposal, which has been approved by American leadership and the Netanyahu government, outlines an quick halt to hostilities and the release of 48 detained individuals, only 20 individuals are believed to be alive, in compensation of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The framework requires that once all involved agree to the initiative "humanitarian support will be quickly dispatched into the conflict zone"
It also states that the militant group would have no involvement in governing Gaza, and it allows for an independent Palestinian nation.
Latest Updates
On Friday, the group answered to the initiative in a announcement, in which the group consented "to liberate all Israeli prisoners, both surviving and deceased, according to the swap arrangement contained in the American plan" - if the proper conditions for the transfers are fulfilled.
It did not specifically mention or accept the comprehensive proposal but said it "reaffirms its commitment to relinquish the governance of the Gaza Strip to a local administration of professionals, based on regional unity and regional endorsement"
The announcement omitted reference of one of the key demands of the initiative – that the militant group consent to its disarmament and to playing no further role in the leadership of Gaza.
Regional Reactions
Gaza inhabitants described Hamas' response to the ceasefire proposal as unanticipated, after an extended period of suggestions that the faction was preparing to reject or at least significantly qualify its acceptance of the US framework.
Conversely, the militant group refrained from including its established limits in the formal declaration, a move many view as a sign of international influence.
International and regional leaders have endorsed the initiative. The local administration, which governs areas of the Palestinian territories, has called the US president's efforts as "sincere and determined"
The Islamic Republic - which has been one of the group's primary supporters for decades - has also now signalled its support for the US proposal.
Ongoing Reality
