Significant Web Disruption Impacts Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

An extensive internet outage has impacted many online platforms and apps globally, with users reporting issues getting online after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The affected services encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-operated operations such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of difficulties accessing the the tax authority online portal on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring customers used online platforms to complain their home gadgets were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of disruptions on individual applications totaled the many thousands for each app.

The company stated that the outage originated in the Atlantic coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a unit that offers crucial web backbone for a host of businesses, who lease space on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest online services service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The cascading impact was seen to hit apps around the world, and the outage tracking website indicating outages with the identical platforms in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, also reported a rise in issues on that morning, with many of them found in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the issues began.
