Moreover, Trump suggested he would contemplate parallel steps against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to perceived security concerns.

Although Trump holds no official jurisdiction to directly relocate either tournament, he is able to exert influence the respective governing bodies in charge of each tournament to move locations.

Context of Remarks

These comments were made during a news conference with Argentinian president Milei, who was visiting the presidential residence following the announcement of a $20 billion financial assistance for the South American country. At the end of the event, a media member asked Trump about a latest unauthorized gathering in the city where authorities were assaulted and a police vehicle was burned. The reporter also questioned if the situation could result in the loss of organizing rights for the expanded World Cup.

“It's possible to take them away,” he remarked about the FIFA World Cup matches, set to be hosted at the Foxborough venue. “Their mayor is ineffective … they're extremist, and activists are dominating parts of downtown. That is a major claim, isn't it?”

“When a mayor is performing poorly, and I perceive there are security risks, I would call the FIFA head, who is outstanding, and say we should relocate it to another location,” Trump said publicly. “And he would do that. He might not prefer the action, but he would comply. Very easily, he’d do it.”

FIFA President has made no secret his attempts to be closely connected with the former president before next year’s tournament, scheduled to be hosted in multiple US locations across the America along with a couple in the northern neighbor and multiple in Mexico. The head has appeared at various Oval Office functions, had Trump deliver the FIFA club award after the concluding game, and has even rescheduled his own organization’s congress to accompany Trump on a journey to the Middle East previously.
